Year 1

Year 1 marks the beginning of Key Stage 1 and the start of the national curriculum. In Year, the children experience so many exciting learning opportunities through the curriculum subjects of Phonics, Reading, Writing, Maths, Art, DT, Computing, History, Geography, RE, PE, PSHE and Science.

Transition

At St John’s children join Year One following the familiar daily routines and free flow learning they have enjoyed in the EYFS. Activities are set up to support learning objectives and allow children to explore and learn through hands on experiences whilst teaching staff support, question and challenge children’s learning. Mornings typically involve fun practical Maths and interactive English lessons followed by foundation subject in the afternoons.

We are lucky at St John’s to have a large outdoor area for Year 1 children with a canopy and raised beds.  Much of their science and geography curriculum is taught outdoors.  In order to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, the children partake in two P.E. lessons a week, as well as having the opportunity to be involved in extra-curricular sporting activities.

In the summer term, the children complete a Phonics screening check with their teacher, the results of which are shared with you as part of their annual report.
